Severe Weather In-Field Training (SWIFT)

In the summer of 2018, I spent two weeks on the road chasing severe weather across the Great Plains with the Naval Academy’s Oceanography department. The above photo was shot on a chase day in northeastern Colorado when our team followed the same storm throughout most of the evening with the hopes of catching sight of a tornado. Although tornadoes eluded us due to limited CAPE and bulk shear, we were still lucky to observe a mesmerizing supercell and a fantastic lightning show as the sun set over the landscape. Our chase van served as a temporary two-week home, parked (above) alongside the railroad tracks we chose as our vantage point to observe the developing storm.
